Apple MacBook Power Adapter Laptop Charger 85w

There are several versions of the 85W Apple MacBook charger, distinguished by their connector type: MagSafe 1, MagSafe 2, and USB-C

. The correct charger for your MacBook depends on the specific model and its production year.

MagSafe 1 (L- or T-shaped connector)

This version has a thicker, older magnetic connector and is designed for MacBook Pro models manufactured between 2008 and mid-2012. The connector came in two shapes: an “L-shape” and a later “T-shape”.

Models: For 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pro models.
Design: The magnetic connector is thicker than the MagSafe 2 and will disconnect if the cable experiences undue strain.
Identification: Look for a rounder, thicker connector. If you are unsure, check the model number on your MacBook and verify the year it was manufactured.

MagSafe 2 (T-shaped connector)

Introduced in mid-2012, this version features a flatter and wider magnetic connector to fit the thinner, more modern MacBook Pro models with Retina displays.

Models: Specifically for MacBook Pro models with Retina displays, including the 13-inch and 15-inch versions produced from mid-2012 through 2015.
Design: The connector is thin and wide, with the same magnetic breakaway safety feature as the MagSafe 1.
Identification: The connector is flat and “T-shaped.” A MagSafe 1 to MagSafe 2 adapter was also available for backward compatibility. The 85W MagSafe 2 adapter model number is A1424.

USB-C

Newer MacBook models have transitioned away from the magnetic MagSafe system to USB-C ports for charging. The wattage can vary, but 85W versions are available.

Models: Found on MacBooks released from late 2015 onward, including the 15-inch MacBook Pro models.
Design: This is a rectangular USB-C connector. There is no magnetic breakaway feature on these chargers, though Apple has reintroduced a magnetic MagSafe connector on some of its latest models, which are not compatible with the older versions.
Note: While older MagSafe chargers were proprietary, you can now use many third-party USB-C adapters that support the necessary wattage.

How to choose the right charger

Find your MacBook’s model: Go to the Apple menu > About This Mac. This will provide your model’s year and size.
Determine the connector type: Look at the charging port on your MacBook to see if it’s the older MagSafe 1, the newer MagSafe 2, or a modern USB-C port.
Match the wattage: The 85W charger is designed for 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pro models. While you can use a higher-wattage charger with a lower-wattage MacBook, you should not use a lower-wattage charger on a device that requires 85W, as it may not charge properly.
